Teresa Knox is an entrepreneur whose ventures span education, entertainment, real estate, and cultural preservation, with a focus on sustainable models that serve the public good. She developed and restored the Harwelden Mansion, a 1923 English Tudor boutique hotel and events center, as well as The Church Studio, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Church is a nonprofit recording studio, audio engineering school, event space, museum, and tourist destination. She also developed Tulsa’s Studio Row district, where she serves as landlord to numerous creative and commercial tenants.
A fourth-generation Oklahoman, Teresa began her professional journey at the age of 18 as a dental assistant. That experience shaped her belief in the value of hands-on education. In 1995, she founded what would become a three-college campus system: Community Care College, Clary Sage College, and Oklahoma Technical College. Two decades later, she transitioned the colleges into the nonprofit Community HigherEd to broaden access to career-focused education to more Oklahoma students.
Teresa also founded and later sold Knox Laboratory Services, a drug and alcohol testing company inspired by the impact of addiction on families and communities. She remains a strong advocate for safe, drug-free workplaces and schools.
She has been recognized with honors such as SBA’s Small Business of the Year, AWC’s Newsmaker Award, Best Places to Work, Tulsan of the Year, and induction into the Tulsa Hall of Fame. In 2023, the Mayor of Tulsa proclaimed April 15 as Teresa Knox Day.
A collector of music memorabilia, antiques, and vintage cars, Teresa is dedicated to preserving Tulsa’s cultural heritage. She holds an MBA from Oral Roberts University and lives in Tulsa with her husband, Ivan. She is the proud mother to Ronnie, Lilliana, and Annabel.
Q: What is the School of Hard Knox?
A: It’s my unofficial alma mater and probably my realest education. I’ve learned more from starting a school, building businesses, restoring buildings, and navigating life’s curveballs than any classroom ever offered. This site is where I bring all of that together.
Q: What drives your work?
A: Legacy. Place. People. I’m obsessed with Tulsa and believe its story deserves to be told with reverence and boldness. I enjoy breathing new life into spaces and ideas that matter, especially those that often go overlooked.
Q: What connects all your ventures?
A: Everything I take on is rooted in purpose. I’m drawn to projects that tell a story—whether that’s a building with a rich history, a neighborhood with great potential, or a book that captures a moment in time. If it resonates, I’m in.
Q: Do you offer consulting or mentorship?
A: Occasionally. I’m selective about where I spend my energy, but if your project aligns with my passions—preservation, music, education, or Tulsa—I’m always open to a conversation.
Q: What advice would you give your younger self?
A: Trust your instincts. Take the risk. And when it feels like you’re in over your head, keep swimming. That’s usually where the good stuff begins.
Q: What is Sanctuary of Sound?
A: It’s more than a book—it’s a tribute to a building that shaped music history. Sanctuary of Sound tells the story of The Church Studio, from its early days as a neighborhood church to its transformation into a rock and roll sanctuary. It’s Tulsa’s story and mine, too.
Q: Where can I buy the book?
A: You can grab it online, at The Church Studio, or select bookstores and events. Purchase here »
Q: Are there book events or signings?
A: Yes! We’re planning some beautiful events, both public and for members. You’ll get to see the book in person, tour the studio, and connect over shared stories and music.
Q: Is this a memoir, a history book, or both?
A: It’s both… and neither. It’s part archive, part art piece, and part personal journey. It celebrates the people, the music, and the moments that shaped The Church Studio’s evolution.
Q: Will there be an audiobook or companion album?
A: Yes! The audiobook will be available on your favorite streaming platforms. Each chapter also has an original song recorded right here at The Church Studio. It’s more than just a book—it’s an experience you can hear and feel.
Q: Can I tour The Church Studio?
A: Absolutely. The studio is open to the public for guided tours—we’ve turned this historic space into a living, breathing tribute to music history. You’ll see rare gear, the Leon Russell archive, and maybe even catch a session in progress.
Q: Can I record here?
A: Yes, if you’re serious about your craft. We’re a professional studio offering both analog and digital services, with highly regarded engineers and vintage gear. Reach out through our recording inquiry form—if it feels like the right fit, we’ll make it happen.
Q: What makes The Church Studio special?
A: It’s sacred ground for music lovers. It’s where legends have recorded, and we’ve restored it to honor that legacy while making it relevant for today’s artists.
Q: What is The Church Studio Institute?
A: It’s our audio engineering school, where students learn the art and science of recording in a real working studio. It’s hands-on, immersive, and rooted in the same creative spirit that has always been a part of this place. The Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools licenses the institution.
Q: What’s the connection to Leon Russell?
A: Leon is the connection. He transformed this space in 1972, and everything we do honors his creative legacy. His spirit remains in the walls, both literally and figuratively.
Q: Can I stay at Harwelden Mansion?
A: Yes, and you should. It’s not just an average stay; it’s an experience. You’ll sleep in history, surrounded by beauty, and feel like you’ve stepped into another time (with great Wi-Fi and luxury linens, of course). Learn more »
Q: Do you rent the space for weddings or events?
A: Yes, we do! We love hosting private dinners, business retreats, cocktail parties, nonprofit gatherings, and weddings—especially for clients who appreciate the charm and history of the mansion. Each event is thoughtfully booked to reflect the unique character of the space.
Q: What makes Harwelden unique?
A: It’s one of Tulsa’s most iconic properties, built in 1923, restored with love, and filled with charm. From the architecture to the gardens, it tells a story. And now, it’s yours to experience.
Q: Where did Harwelden get its name?
A: Harwelden means “house of the Harwells.” It was named for Earl P. Harwell and his wife, Mary—early Tulsa pioneers, generous philanthropists, and champions of education. They were among the first donors to Kendall College, now the University of Tulsa. The mansion stands as a reflection of their vision, values, and lasting legacy in this city.
Q: What is Studio Row?
A: Studio Row is a creative district we’re building out around The Church Studio. It’s music, art, food, and Tulsa culture, all within walking distance. Think of it as Tulsa’s version of Music Row, with a soulful twist. I’ve purchased and developed nine buildings and nine lots in the district.
Q: Are you still involved in the real estate industry?
A: Yes. Through my holding company, we focus on historic preservation and innovative development projects with a purpose while being the landlord to over a dozen commercial tenants.
Q: What’s your approach to restoration?
A: Respect the bones. I don’t believe in erasing history to make things shiny. I believe in honoring what’s there, breathing new life into it, and keeping the character intact.
Q: Are there business or investment opportunities?
A: Sometimes. We enjoy working with individuals who view the long game—those who are committed to Tulsa and want to be part of something that endures.
Q: How can I support your work?
A: Come visit. Buy the book. Stay at the mansion. Share the story. Support the mission of The Church Studio Music Foundation, a 501(c)(3). Every bit helps grow the community around these special places. Learn more here »
Q: Are you available for speaking engagements?
A: Sometimes. If it’s aligned with music, history, entrepreneurship, or Tulsa, I’m open. Send a note through the contact page.
Q: How can I stay updated?
A: Follow along on my social channels or those of The Church Studio, Studio Row, and Harwelden Mansion. We share upcoming events, behind-the-scenes projects, and the magic of Tulsa.
